Reflecting on the FALAS Webinar on Sexual and Gender-Based Violence in Sierra Leone

The Federation of African Law Students (FALAS) – Sierra Leone successfully hosted an insightful and impactful webinar on 30 May 2026, bringing together legal professionals, law students, and advocates to examine one of Sierra Leone's most pressing human rights issues—Sexual and Gender-Based Violence (SGBV).

Held virtually via Google Meet, the webinar centered on the theme:

"Sexual & Gender-Based Violence in Sierra Leone: Legal Protection Gaps, Institutional Response, and Access to Survivor Justice with a Focus on Women and Girls."

The event provided an important platform for participants to critically assess Sierra Leone's legal framework, institutional response mechanisms, and the persistent barriers survivors encounter in their pursuit of justice.

A Timely and Necessary Conversation

Throughout the session, speakers highlighted that while Sierra Leone has made commendable progress through legislative reforms and policy interventions aimed at combating sexual and gender-based violence, significant challenges remain. Participants explored issues such as gaps in legal protection, delays in the justice system, underreporting of cases, societal stigma, limited survivor support services, and the need for stronger institutional collaboration.

The discussions emphasized that ensuring justice for survivors requires more than robust legislation—it demands effective implementation, survivor-centered services, public awareness, and sustained commitment from both state and non-state actors.

Expert Contributions

The webinar featured an engaging panel comprising distinguished legal professionals and advocates:

  • Abdul M. Bangura, Esq.

  • Zariatu Turay

  • Paul Kamara, Esq.

Each speaker shared valuable professional insights, drawing on practical experiences to discuss the realities of handling SGBV cases, strengthening legal institutions, and improving access to justice for women and girls. Their presentations encouraged meaningful dialogue among participants and challenged attendees to consider innovative approaches to addressing existing legal and institutional shortcomings.

Engaging Participants

The webinar attracted law students, legal practitioners, civil society representatives, and members of the public who actively participated in discussions and interactive question-and-answer sessions. Participants exchanged perspectives on the effectiveness of current laws, the responsibilities of justice sector institutions, and the role young legal professionals can play in promoting accountability and protecting survivors' rights.

The high level of engagement reflected the growing interest among future legal professionals in contributing to meaningful reforms that address gender-based violence in Sierra Leone.

Looking Ahead

The successful conclusion of the webinar reaffirmed FALAS Sierra Leone's commitment to promoting legal education, advocacy, and informed dialogue on issues affecting justice and human rights across the country.

By creating a space for critical discussions on sexual and gender-based violence, the webinar not only enhanced participants' understanding of the legal and institutional landscape but also reinforced the collective responsibility to strengthen survivor protection, improve access to justice, and advocate for reforms that safeguard the rights and dignity of women and girls.

As Sierra Leone continues its journey toward a more equitable and responsive justice system, conversations such as these remain essential in shaping policy, inspiring advocacy, and empowering the next generation of legal professionals to champion justice for all.
